Division of Trauma, Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery
Innovative care, research and training to improve lives after serious injury
OHSU has a long and rich history in trauma, critical care and acute care surgery and research. Internationally renowned trauma surgeon Donald D. Trunkey, M.D., led our Department of Surgery for 15 years. The Donald D. Trunkey Center for Civilian and Combat Casualty Care continues his groundbreaking work.

Clinical programs
Trauma, critical care and acute care
Our surgeons provide expert care to the most seriously injured patients in the state. Through OHSU’s Level 1 trauma center, we treat more than 4,600 patients each year.
Our research funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has helped improve trauma care throughout the state, contributing to better survival rates for seriously injured Oregonians.
Elective surgery clinic
As trauma and acute care surgeons, we understand the toll caring for severely injured patients takes on providers. We offer our surgeons the opportunity to have an elective general surgery practice. This allows you to develop longer-term relationships with patients while supporting your well-being.
Research programs, studies and clinical trials
We are studying how to help people with upper arm amputations regain function through targeted muscle reinnervation. Nerves in the upper arm or shoulder that controlled the amputated area of a person’s arm are transplanted into other muscles. Rehabilitation after surgery focuses on training patients to use their thoughts to control prostheses.
A related project studies a system that enables quadriplegic patients to perform daily living activities using eye control.
Donald D. Trunkey Center for Civilian and Combat Casualty Care
The center combines research expertise, partners and resources to advance trauma care and improve patient outcomes. Established in April 2020, the center connects trauma care clinicians and investigators from disciplines across OHSU and the VA Portland Health Care System.
Community violence prevention
We are studying ways to promote health equity and prevent firearm injuries by working with community-based intervention programs, including the Portland Opportunities Industrialization Center. These programs are led by local communities and work to reduce the root causes of firearm and other violence.
