Jerris R. Hedges Emergency Medicine Endowment Fund

Overview

Jerris R. Hedges, M.D., M.S., M.M.M., is internationally recognized for his contributions to the development of emergency medicine as a scientific discipline. As chair emeritus of the OHSU Department of Emergency Medicine and former vice dean of the OHSU School of Medicine, Dr. Hedges has been instrumental in helping OHSU achieve national leadership in emergency medicine. OHSU seeks partnerships with others committed to preserving his legacy.

A Pioneer of the Science of Emergency Medicine

As professor and chair of the OHSU Department of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Hedges helped form the Center for Policy & Research in Emergency Medicine, established emergency medicine fellowship programs, and recruited clinician-scientists to participate in several multi-year CDC and NIH funded research programs at OHSU. These efforts led to the department being recognized by the NIH as one of the "top five" research-grant-supported academic departments of emergency medicine.

Dr. Hedges, who currently serves as dean of the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii, Manoa, has served as president of both the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine and the Association of Academic Chairs of Emergency Medicine. He was the founding editor of Academic Emergency Medicine and has served on the editorial board of numerous journals in emergency medicine. Dr. Hedges was elected to the prestigious National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine (IOM) in October 2000. Dr. Hedges's textbook, Clinical Procedures in Emergency Medicine, helped define the discipline and set the standard for evidence-based practice textbooks addressing clinical procedures.

Building on Dr. Hedges's Legacy

To honor Dr. Hedges's contributions to the specialty of emergency medicine and to the Department of Emergency Medicine at OHSU, we have established the Jerris R. Hedges Endowment in Emergency Medicine. The ultimate goal is to raise funds to the Endowed Professorship level.

The Jerris R. Hedges Endowed Professorship will provide a perpetual revenue stream dedicated to continuing Dr. Hedges's legacy of outstanding research, education, and clinical care in emergency medicine. Private gifts will allow us to enhance our research efforts through the Center for Policy & Research in Emergency Medicine. Dr. Hedges's contributions to emergency medicine were focused on the application of scientific principles to develop better systems of health care. The endowment fund will sponsor a leading scientist who will help with the translation of clinical knowledge into enhanced health services delivery for Oregonians.

Supporting the Jerris Hedges Endowment

Achieving our goal of establishing the Jerris R. Hedges Endowed Professorship will ensure that those who share Dr. Hedges's commitment to excellence will help us pass that commitment along to future generations. The fund will accept pledges, one-time cash payments and deferred gifts, including: bequests, gift annuities, and trusts. The OHSU Foundation's gift planning professionals can assist with gifts of real estate, stocks, bonds, gifts-in-kind and other marketable assets.
