About me

I’m an orthopedic surgeon specializing in adult hip and knee care, including joint replacement and complex reconstructive surgery.

I help patients who are living with:

  • Arthritis
  • Joint pain
  • Instability
  • Other conditions that affect mobility and comfort

My goal is to improve your quality of life by helping you achieve your functional goals and stay active in the activities you enjoy.

I provide both non-surgical and surgical care. Whenever possible, I work with you to avoid surgery through conservative treatments, but when joint replacement or revision surgery is necessary, I aim to offer safe, effective procedures backed by the latest evidence.

I want my patients to feel empowered to participate in their care plans, and I take time to explain your diagnosis and options in clear, understandable language so you can make informed decisions.

I’m dedicated to helping patients restore or maintain a healthy, active lifestyle, whether that’s walking comfortably, returning to travel or enjoying time with family and friends. It’s an honor to support you through every step of your hip or knee care journey.

Insurance

Before scheduling an appointment

  1. Check your network. If you have health insurance,  call your company to find out if the OHSU Health location or provider you plan to visit is part of your network.
  2. Ask what you will pay. Your insurance company can tell you what your costs are likely to be.

If you schedule an appointment and your health insurance does not include OHSU Health, you may have to pay more than if you go to a provider in your insurance network.

Visit our billing and insurance page for more information.

  1. Very informative and willing to help

  2. Dr. S was meticulous with my care and the stitching up after TKR. She is totally careful and caring; she has done both my knee replacements.

  3. Dr. K. Schabel evidently performed the hip revison well, as I am recovering steadily. At the consultation, she helped me to feel assured that the procedure would be beneficial and that the skill set needed was something she in which had confidence. I was quite afraid of the whole situation of having toxic metals in my system caused by the MoM. Dr. Schabel was direct, informative, and certain that this procedure was necessary. Now, my only fear hanging out here is just how the metals can be reduced from my systems, an aspect of this endeavor that has yet to be adequately addressed. I am wanting follow up with Dr. Schabel to directly address medical toxicology needs that seem to be obvious that I am needing yet I have no understanding as yet as to how to attain such unique medical services.

  4. Dr Kathryn Schabel was very helpful in explaining in detail what the problem with my hip was and the reasons for surgery. She was very positive about it and reassured me that this is the best course of action. I am very pleased with the total success of my surgery.

  5. Love this surgeon!!!!

  6. Very good experience with clinician.

  7. Very knowledgeable and informative

  8. Dr Schabel is welcoming, friendly, and concerned. She makes me feel comfortable right away. I would prefer to have more detail about the surgery itself, but maybe I will get that later.

  9. Everyone was very kind and helpful through the entire process. Juana was funny and pleasant and Dr Schabel is just the best. She addressed all of my concerns and has me feeling confident about the road ahead.

  10. She was through and polite
