About me

Dr. Onishi was born and raised in Japan where she received her medical degree from Tsukuba School of Medicine. While in medical school, she completed her externship in Irvine, California, where she was first exposed to family medicine, which was not widely practiced or formally taught in Japan at the time. Finding it to be a uniquely challenging and interesting specialization, later returned to the States to complete her family medicine residency training at Union Hospital in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Prior to joining OHSU in 2011, Dr. Onishi practiced medicine in rural Indiana then settled in Columbus, Indiana, where she worked in private practice and provided primary care to many Japanese in the area. Dr. Onishi also practices hospice care and has been board certified in hospice and palliative medicine.

Her professional interest includes the spectrum of family medicine, particularly palliative medicine and end of life care. She is actively involved in working to further the practice of family medicine in her native Japan and is excited to continue that work while at OHSU.

In her spare time, she enjoys outdoor activities with her family and loves to run with her dog.

Insurance

Before scheduling an appointment

  1. Check your network. If you have health insurance,  call your company to find out if the OHSU Health location or provider you plan to visit is part of your network.
  2. Ask what you will pay. Your insurance company can tell you what your costs are likely to be.

If you schedule an appointment and your health insurance does not include OHSU Health, you may have to pay more than if you go to a provider in your insurance network.

Visit our billing and insurance page for more information.

  1. As both the patient and doctor are from Japan, my mother can clearly express herself in her primary language. Interpreting also requires an understanding of behaviors normal to different countries-language includes mannerisms, values, and cultural practices

  2. Was very concerned about my health

  3. Eas to talk to and thorough

  4. Dr Onishi is the most knowledgeable, extremely kind- and as I found out the first time I met the Doctor, to this very day and without a worry to seeing her in the future- just to be around Dr.Onishi I can only explain as an Aura of care around her! You don't have to wonder or even ask someone if she cares about you, for me, I just sense it! I feel it the moment she is within my vicinity Honestly, you may think me strange but it's my honest truth! While around me, I feel cared for and a special added feeling I feel cared about as a human being! I've never met a Doctor male or female in my life with what I would call a unique quality! I tell all I know and if you asked those I've told, they would say Dr Onishi, you must be referring to Sean's "ONE IN A MILLION" Doctor, as that Is how I refer to her! OHSU Especially those who should know, that such a beautiful diamond of a Doctor they have and her unique knowledge, kindness and that Aura of care rub off to all the others! It is my truth! I am also known as truthful and definitely not afraid to tell you how I see it, Good -Bad-or Ugly! Need I say more? I think not. But I would if need be.
