Chemical Peels at OHSU Cosmetic and Plastic Services

Chemical peels can improve fine lines, mild scars, some acne, dark spots and wrinkles.

Chemical peels are treatments used to improve and smooth the texture of skin by removing its damaged outer layers. Peels are helpful for facial blemishes, wrinkles, acne and uneven skin pigmentation, caused by sun damage, pregnancy and other factors. Chemical peels can be used on the face, neck and back of hands.

Chemical peels have various strengths and different chemical peels achieve different results. OHSU aestheticians have the expertise to choose the right peel treatment for your skin type and what type of correction your skin needs. Fine lines around your mouth or under your eyes, mild scars, certain types of acne, wrinkles caused by sun damage or aging, dark patches caused by the sun, birth control pills or pregnancy all can be improved with chemical peels.

The procedure

If you are interested in getting a chemical peel, you should start with a consultation with an aesthetician. There are chemical peels that can be performed the same day as a consultation, but others require some skin preparation before the treatment can be given.

Once you and your aesthetician decide upon a chemical peel, the procedure is completed in an office visit. Pre- and post-peel care instructions will be provided to you, as well as the level of redness, peeling and scaling that you should expect given your skin type and depth of peel chosen. A series of chemical peels may be needed to achieve the results you seek.

Following your treatment

A series of chemical peels may be needed to achieve the results you seek.

Exposure to direct sunlight within the first two weeks after a chemical peel is strongly discouraged and a daily sunscreen is extremely important. You should expect some light to moderate flaking and possible peeling within the first 2-7 days. You will receive a detailed explanation of how to care for your skin post peel at the time of your treatment.
