A mammogram is a low-dose X-ray of the breast. It is used to detect and diagnose breast disease in women who either have breast problems such as a lump, pain, or nipple discharge, as well as for women who have no breast complaints. The procedure allows detection of breast cancers, benign tumors, and cysts before they can be detected by palpation (touch).

Mammography has been used for about 30 years. The radiation risks are considered to be negligible. In the past 15 years technical advancements have greatly improved both the technique and results. The Breast Center at OHSU offers conventional digital mammography, as well as three-dimensional (3-D) mammography technology, also called breast tomosynthesis.

American College of Radiology (ACR) recognizes OHSU as a Breast Center of Excellence. This designation is gained by seeking and earning accreditation in all of the ACR’s voluntary breast-imaging accreditation programs and modules, in addition to the mandatory Mammography Accreditation Program. The Mammography Accreditation Program provides facilities with peer review and constructive feedback on staff qualifications, equipment, quality control, quality assurance, image quality and radiation dose. The 1992 Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) requires that all mammography facilities in the United States be accredited.1
