Sexual Health Resources

Sexual Health Equity for Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (SHEIDD), growing connection, coordination and support

We are all sexual beings. And that includes people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, shortened to I/DD. Despite this fact, youth with disabilities often do not have access to sexual health education.

Everyone has a part to play in providing sexual health education to youth with disabilities, including:

  • Peers
  • Friends
  • Parents and guardians
  • Family
  • Support service providers and coordinators
  • Health care professionals
  • Teachers
  • Organizations

What is holistic sexual health education?

Young people with I/DD have told us they want to receive holistic sexual health education. Holistic sexual health education helps people learn:

  • Who they are
  • What their rights are
  • How to express themselves
  • How to build healthy relationships

When we provide young people with I/DD holistic sexual health education, we support their relationship, sexual, and reproductive rights.
