The OHSU Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine offers an ACGME-accredited two year fellowship program in Neuropathology. Given the variable and changing roles of academic neuropathologists, applicants are encouraged to meet with the fellowship director to define their career objectives and training program. All fellows acquire clinical skills in adult and pediatric autopsy and surgical neuropathology, and neuromuscular pathology. The balance of clinical and research activities for each fellow is based on the individual's previous training and their development of diagnostic skills. The Neuropathology fellow is rapidly placed in charge of managing the clinical service under the supervision of the clinical faculty. Faculty supervision is rotated on a biweekly basis, exposing the fellow to different clinical and research perspectives.

The Neuropathology Section of the OHSU Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is staffed by three neuropathologists. Other participating faculty members include a neuromuscular specialist, an ophthalmic pathologist, and forensic pathologists from the Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office.

The Neuropathology faculty members have research programs studying a variety of neurological diseases. The fellow may work with any of these individuals or other OHSU faculty (e.g. faculty in the departments of Neurosurgery, Radiology, Neurology, Neurosciences, Psychiatry).

The OHSU neuropathology fellowship program's aims are to train the fellow to: - provide professional, high quality clinical neuropathology consultations - demonstrate knowledge about established and evolving biomedical, clinical, and cognitive sciences and their application to neuropathology - demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that result in effective information exchange and teaming with colleagues - demonstrate a commitment to carry out professional responsibilities, adherence to ethical principles and sensitivity to a diverse patient population - demonstrate ability to investigate and evaluate their diagnostic and consultative practices, assimilate scientific evidence, and improve patient care practice - demonstrate awareness and responsiveness to the health care system and have the ability to call on system resources to provide optimal pathology services.

Eligibility

Applicants must have completed at least 2 years of AP training in an ACGME- or RCPSC-accredited program and have passed the USMLE Step 3 exam. Applicants must be legally able to work in the U.S., or eligible to obtain work authorization, and are expected to take and pass the ABP neuropathology examination upon graduation.
