Research

The Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) Department of Medicine unites the clinical and scientific expertise of our academic community. We push the boundaries of knowledge with the goal of improving the health and quality of life of the people of Oregon and beyond. The Department proudly cultivates a research environment that promotes innovation, collaboration, rigor, and lifelong inquiry. We hold ourselves to the highest standards of scientific rigor, ethical conduct, transparency and responsiveness to the needs of patients and communities to foster an environment where curiosity flourishes, team science thrives, and discovery translates to real-world impact.

Our Research Mission

We pursue discovery, application and dissemination:

  • Discovery: We explore fundamental mechanisms of disease to generate novel insights into pathophysiology, biomarkers, and therapeutic targets.
  • Translation: We advance those insights into new diagnostics, therapies, interventions and care models through rigorous pre-clinical and early-phase work.
  • Clinical & Health Systems Research: We conduct clinical trials, observational studies, and health systems research to generate evidence that improves clinical care and informs policy.
  • Implementation & Community: We implement and evaluate interventions in real-world settings, with a commitment to reducing gaps in care and ensuring that gains in health reach all communities.
  • Mentor the next generation of physician-scientists ranging from undergraduate students and medical students to fellows and early-career faculty.

Our Scope & Strengths

Our Department’s eleven divisions span a wide spectrum of subspecialty, general internal medicine, and population science. We believe that integrated research and clinical care accelerates discoveries from bench to bedside. Our investigators consistently:

  • Collaborate across disciplines (e.g., biostatistics, bioinformatics, epidemiology, population health, basic science)
  • Engage with institutional research cores and shared resources to advance research efficiency and innovation.
  • Secure competitive funding from the National Institutes of Health, foundations, and other sponsors
  • Publish discoveries in top‐tier peer‐reviewed journals.
