From the Chair
Every residency program promises excellent clinical training. At OHSU, our aspiration is broader: to develop physicians who will shape the future of medicine as clinicians, educators, investigators, advocates, and leaders.
Portland has a reputation for independent thinking. Its unofficial motto, "Keep Portland Weird," celebrates curiosity, creativity, and the courage to see the world differently. The best academic internists share those same qualities. They look beyond today's answer to tomorrow's question, challenge assumptions, and remain lifelong learners.
As Oregon's academic health center, OHSU offers the opportunity to care for patients with extraordinary complexity while learning alongside scientists, educators, and clinicians who are advancing medicine every day. We foster a culture of inquiry and discovery, supporting residents as they explore their interests, pursue new ideas, and define their own paths in medicine.
We also believe that academic medicine is fundamentally rooted in service. We are deeply committed to the communities that place their trust in us. Whether caring for patients from Portland neighborhoods, rural Oregon, across the Pacific Northwest, or beyond, we strive to combine scientific excellence with humility, compassion, and partnership. Our goal is not only to advance medicine, but also to improve the health of the communities we serve.
Just as importantly, we are a community. Our faculty are invested not only in the accomplishments of our trainees, but also in their growth as physicians and people. We celebrate achievement, scholarship, and innovation, while valuing kindness, collegiality, and the joy of learning together.
And then there is Portland itself. Nestled among mountains, forests, rivers, and coastline, our city offers extraordinary natural beauty and endless opportunities for adventure. Equally important is the culture that surrounds us: exceptional food and coffee, a vibrant music and arts scene, and a spirit of creativity and authenticity that makes Portland a remarkable place to live and train.
Some of our graduates will become physician-scientists, educators, division chiefs, department chairs, and health system leaders. Others will become master clinicians whose influence is felt one patient and one learner at a time. What they share is a commitment to curiosity, service, and excellence.
If you are looking for a place where curiosity is valued, mentorship is intentional, community matters, and your ambitions will be supported, I hope you will consider OHSU.
We would be honored to help launch your career in academic medicine.
