The Internal Medicine Interest Group (IMIG) is a group of medical students who share an interest in a career in the specialty of Internal Medicine. The group supports medical students’ exploration of the specialty, as well as hosts an annual “Road to Residency” series to support 4th year students in their applications to residency.

Who they are: MD student leaders representing the Internal Medicine Interest Group from various cohorts 

Role: Serve as a connection between students interested in IM, faculty, residents, and the department 

Key functions: 

• Organize IM‑focused educational, mentorship, and career exploration
• events 
• Lead the “Road to Residency” series for IM-bound 4th‑year students 
• Represent the institution at ACP meetings and IM‑related conferences 
• Develop and initiate new programs to support student engagement in
• Internal Medicine 

Collaboration: 

• Partner with faculty and residents on panels, workshops, and
• mentorship initiatives 
• Support departmental recruitment and professional development
• efforts

Who they are: Selected 4th year medical students representing the IM clerkship 

Role: Serve as a liaison between students, residents, faculty, and clerkship leadership 

Key functions: 

• Collect and communicate student feedback 
• Identify needs and initiate new projects or ideas to improve the clerkship 
• Support peer learning, professionalism, and wellness 

Collaboration: 

• Partner with faculty and residents on teaching innovations 
• Engage in QI and medical education initiatives

Who they are: Medical student leaders who serve on the Department of Medicine Grand Rounds Community Building Team.

Role: Foster student engagement, professional identity formation, and career exploration through participation in Internal Medicine Grand Rounds.

Key functions: 

• Encourage medical student participation and help build a welcoming Grand Rounds community.
• Lead post–Grand Rounds enrichment sessions called GATHER Sessions, where students, particularly preclinical learners, engage speakers in discussions about the Grand Rounds topic, career paths, and professional development.
• Gather learner feedback and identify opportunities to enhance the student experience.
• Opportunity to develop and lead a Grand Rounds project that advances education, community, or innovation related to Grand Rounds.

Collaboration: 

Student Leads partner with faculty, residents, fellows, and Grand Rounds leadership to strengthen learner engagement and contribute to a vibrant Department of Medicine community
