Applicant Information
2026-27 Application Period
We will accept intern applications for the 2026-27 academic year until September 23, 2026 via the Electronic Residency Application Service. We use Thalamus to manage our interview scheduling. All positions will be filled via the NRMP Match using the following program codes:
- Categorical Track: 1599140C0
- Physician-Scientist Training Program: 1599140C2*
- * We are currently accepting PSTP applications only in Hematology and Medical Oncology. We anticipate expanding to additional subspecialties in future years.
To learn more about our program and what we offer, we invite applicants to explore all the links in the navigation menu to the left, in addition to the information below.
-
Given the large number of highly qualified applicants, we will only review candidates who have submitted a program signal (silver or gold). Sending a signal does not guarantee an interview. We endorse the AAMC and AAIM recommendations that applicants should signal their home institution if they are interested in the program. Geographic preference for our region will be considered as part of our holistic selection criteria.
-
We will complete a holistic review of application files once they are complete with the following items:
- Dean's Letter/MSPE
- Department/Chair Letter
- Letters of Recommendation
- 2 minimum/3 maximum (at least 1 by an IM faculty)
- Personal statement
- Medical School Transcript
- USMLE and/or COMLEX Transcript(s)
- passing score on Step 1 required for application review
- passing scores on Steps 1 & 2 required for ranking
All OHSU policies regarding eligibility for appointment to a residency position, as well as the most current version of our house officer contract, may be found here.
ERAS Applications must be submitted to us by September 23, 2026, all supplemental materials (MSPE, Letters of Recommendation, Personal Statement, Medical School Transcript, and USMLE Transcript with at least a Step 1 result) must be received no later than October 1, 2026. Any applications that remain incomplete after 10/1/26 will not be reviewed and will be removed from consideration.
-
In addition to the standard materials listed above, applicants to the PSTP are also required to submit the following:
- Two research letters of recommendation (may be submitted outside of ERAS)
- Research personal statement
The research personal statement is your opportunity to convey your scientific trajectory and goals. In one to two pages, we encourage you to:
- Describe your research career goals and the kind of physician-scientist you aim to become
- Summarize your prior research experience, highlighting specific contributions, publications, presentations, or other accomplishments
- Explain your motivation for pursuing your chosen subspecialty and a research-focused career through the ABIM Research Pathway
- Identify the research areas or questions that interest you, along with OHSU investigators whose work aligns with your goals and with whom you would like to meet during the interview process
-
International medical graduates must be ECFMG certified by the NRMP ranking deadline (February) to be considered. Current international medical students must be certified by June in the year they graduate. We require at least one year of clinical experience in the U.S. or in a health care system like the U.S. (e.g., Australia, Ireland, etc.). Applicants must have graduated from medical school in the last two years. Please note that we do not count externships, observerships, or research work as clinical experience.
-
We will continue to host our interviews virtually for the foreseeable future. While we regret the lost opportunity for face-to-face connection with our applicants, we strongly believe this is outweighed by what is gained in terms of equity and environmental health. Requiring travel for in-person interviews creates a system of inequity among applicants. It also contributes significantly to climate change, which we believe physicians have a moral imperative to address given its substantial impact on the health of our patients. To ensure that you still get an adequate sense of who we are, we will continue to provide details about our residency through our website, social media account (Instagram), and comprehensive program videos.
Once an application has been reviewed by our selection committee, the candidate will receive an email notifying them of our decision. Those invited to interview will schedule their interview via the Thalamus online platform. While we regret that we are unable to offer interviews to all applicants due to the volume of applications received, all candidates will be notified of the the outcome of our review.
We recommend you schedule your interview as soon as possible after receiving an invitation. Waiting lists will be offered for all interview dates in the event a candidate needs or prefers a date that is unavailable at the time they attempt to schedule. We will not invite more candidates than we are able to accommodate for interviews.
Our interview dates fall on Mondays and Fridays, with a few Wednesdays throughout the season, and run 8:00am - 2:30pm PST.
PSTP Interviews
In addition to the standard interview described above, PSTP applicants will also complete research-focused interviews virtually with the PSTP Program Director, subspecialty fellowship Program Director, and research faculty. The research interviews are an opportunity for the program to learn about your research interests and goals, and equally for you to evaluate potential mentors and research opportunities at OHSU. The interview schedule and specific dates will be shared with invited applicants.Second Looks
We are unable to offer second looks, either virtually or in person. Any candidate interested in visiting Portland and the OHSU campus is welcome to do so independently. If you are planning a visit, feel free to contact imresapp@ohsu.edu and we are happy to provide you with a list of resources for a self-guided tour of our beautiful city.Post-Interview Communication
Our program adheres to the AAIM recommendation to limit post-interview communication, which helps to avoid miscommunications and unnecessary stress for applicants. Please reach out to us if you have a question specific to our program that was not answered during your interview day or through review of our documents and websites. -
