Department Chair's Welcome

Welcome to the Department of Medicine!
It is a true joy to lead the Department of Medicine here at OHSU. I joined the Department in 2020, initially recruited as Head of the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy & Critical Care Medicine. I have come to appreciate the many strengths of this Department and was honored to step into the Chair role in June of 2023. I’m continually impressed by the creativity and accomplishments of our clinicians, scientists, and learners. I am excited for you to meet us virtually here on our webpages.
Continuing our strong tradition, we are expanding our clinical activities, sustaining and building upon our commitment to the highest quality patient care and growing to meet new clinical needs. Our Department was a source of strength and inspiration during COVID-19 surges, and we remain dedicated to caring both for the population of Oregon and for others coming to Portland for cutting edge treatments.
At the same time, we are exploring new approaches to the diagnosis and management of disease, fostering a vibrant research portfolio and partnering with other clinical and basic science departments and institutes. Our clinicians and clinician-scientists work side by side with basic and translational researchers to better understand the mechanisms of disease, to design and test new treatments, and to study implementation and impacts on population health and health care delivery.
Our leadership in education is at all levels, from medical students and graduate students, through residents and fellows, to continuing medical education is one of our major strengths. We continue to bolster our involvement in graduate studies and explore new approaches to education, including bold changes in curricula at all levels, as well as the innovative use of simulation. We remain committed to the development of flexible programs that suit a variety of learners with diverse career goals.
As is the case with all highly successful organizations, our most treasured asset is our people. We are proud of our increasing diversity, and are working hard to enhance our commitment to equity, inclusion, belonging, and anti-racism. It is a privilege to lead such an outstanding group of colleagues, students, and co-workers in the Department of Medicine.
