The mission of CRISP is to foster an environment for faculty who are promoting prospective Emergency Medicine research and simultaneously expose vetted pre-health students to the world of Clinical Research and Medicine. In addition, we seek to provide our CRISP volunteers with an opportunity to observe patient care in an academic urban Emergency Department as well receive career counseling and support required for the career that they anticipate.
As a part of the Center for Policy and Research in Emergency Medicine (CPR-EM), the Clinical Research Investigative Studies Program (CRISP) represents the research arm of the Department of Emergency Medicine at OHSU. Under the leadership and guidance of CRISP Medical Director, David Sheridan, M.D., M.C.R., and CRISP Program Director, Kamil Narayan., the CRISP program represents the largest volunteer research program on campus staffed approximately with 65+ pre-medical students. CRISP research assistants proficiently screen for patients who come into the OHSU Emergency Department and follow the inclusion/exclusion criteria for each protocol to either enroll or exclude a patient from the study. If a patient deems eligible for the study, the CRISP volunteer will inform the patient about the study, ask if (s)he is willing to participate, and have the patient sign the consent forms. Once the patient is consented, the CRISP research assistant will move forward to collect necessary data from the patient ED treatment team and the patient's medical records.
