OHSU Casey Eye Institute joins Vision 2020/USA in urging U.S. Surgeon General to issue Call to Action to improve eye health
"Vision problems can affect anyone at any age, impacting everything from learning to the ability to work and be independent." Mitchell V. Brinks, M.D., M.P.H., assistant professor of ophthalmology, OHSU School of Medicine and chair of Vision 2020/USA.
OHSU Casey Eye Institute is among the 27 member organizations of Vision 2020/ USA formally asking U. S. Surgeon General Jerome M. Adams to initiate a national "Call to Action" for vision and eye health to mark the year 2020.
The Call to Action is one of the key recommendations offered in a 2016 report by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine to significantly improve the nation's eye health. Issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services through the Office of the Surgeon General, a Call to Action is intended to motivate nationwide action to address the increasing burden of vision impairment across the lifespan of Americans.
"Vision problems can affect anyone at any age, from infants to seniors, impacting everything from learning to the ability to work and be independent," said Mitchell V. Brinks, M.D., M.P.H., assistant professor of ophthalmology, OHSU School of Medicine and chair of Vision 2020/USA. "With the help of U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams and his colleagues, we can work together to successfully address and improve vision health in our country," said Brinks, adding that "Casey is proud to be part of this important effort."
Vision 2020/USA was established in 2009 to coordinate the efforts of the many U.S. organizations working in the field of blindness prevention, both nationally and internationally. Casey is among the nearly 40 academic, professional, private and non-governmental organizations that have come together under the Vision 2020/ USA umbrella. It is the national entity within the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness and its VISION 2020: The Right to Sight initiative, a joint effort with the World Health Organization.
