Neuron Glial Interactions

Interactions between neurons and glial cells are critical for the proper function of the nervous system across species. Glia play vital roles in the nervous system including regulating synapse development and elimination, providing vital trophic support to neurons, establishing a functional blood brain barrier, insulating neuronal axons with myelin, and modulating neural circuits and behavior. NGP faculty employ worm, fly, fish, rodents, and primate models to understand the molecular, cellular, and genetic mechanisms that govern neuron-glial interactions in development, health, and disease.
