Please join us (remotely) for a virtual Grand Rounds presentation, “Obesity Medicine: A Call to Therapeutic Arms in Primary Care” presented by Jonathan Purnell, MD

This presentation will present management of overweight and obesity as a chronic disease, including review of the latest information on the physiology of body weight regulation and pathophysiology that leads to unwanted weight gain and obesity. Guidelines from the AAFP for obesity management will be reviewed, including indications for anti-obesity medications and metabolic-bariatric surgery. Core competencies for obesity medicine will be reviewed and barriers to using therapeutic options beyond lifestyle medicine in the primary care setting will be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this lecture participants will be able to

1. Describe the physiological, pathophysiological and subsequent complications that make obesity a chronic disease.
2. Describe the AAFP guideline recommendations for use of anti-obesity medications and metabolic-bariatric surgery.
3. Provide strategies for implementing these guidelines in eligible patients in primary care practice.
