Mental Health Provider Training Program

In 2022, OODH launched a new training webinar for mental health providers on offering quality health care to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). This webinar series has been updated and expanded to a two-part virtual, on-demand training. The trainings feature experiences of people with IDD who have used mental health care and mental health care providers who have worked with people with IDD in therapy.

Accessible Mental Health Care Series

Course 1: Improving Mental Health Care for Clients with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

This foundational course prepares mental health professionals to provide accessible care to clients with intellectual and developmental disabilities and co-occurring mental health diagnosis.
By the end of this course, mental health providers will be able to:  

  • Recognize the unique needs and challenges faced by individuals with IDD.
  • Reflect on and address personal biases and assumptions to foster inclusive care 
  • Identify and address systemic barriers—such as administrative burdens and limited resources—that impact access to quality mental health care.
  • Apply effective communication strategies, including the use of clear language and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) tools.
  • Build strong therapeutic relationships with clients with IDD.
  • Commit to ongoing advocacy. Take actionable steps to create lasting change.

Accreditation: The School of Medicine, Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Course 2: Mental Health Assessment and Treatment for Clients with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

This intermediate course is designed to enhance the skills of mental health providers in delivering effective care for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).  By the end of this course, you will be equipped with the confidence and tools necessary to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those you serve in your mental health practice.

  • Describe how the Disability Justice framework applies to mental health practice.
  • Apply trauma-informed care principles to address trauma effectively.
  • Recognize the prevalence and impact of trauma on individuals with IDD.
  • Engage supports. Collaborate with families and caregivers to enhance treatment outcomes.
  • Adapt therapy methods. Modify approaches to suit individual needs and preferences.
  • Plan for application. Reflect on course concepts and consider how to implement them in practice.

Completion of Course 1 is not required.

OHSU employees and students: Log in to Compass using your OHSU credentials.  

External users: You will need to request a Compass account if you do not already have one.  

  1. Register for a Compass account
  2. Click on the "Request access to Compass” link
  3. Complete the registration form. (Tip: choose "Volunteer/community provider" in the space for "Role at OHSU")
  4. Verify your account
  5. Log in to Compass and search for the course by title or keyword “IDD”
