Doernbecher Awards and Recognition

OHSU Doernbecher achieves dual verifications in pediatric surgery/trauma

Leading the way in pediatric care, OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital is among the first five hospitals in the nation to become verified as both a Level 1 Children's Trauma Center and a Level 1 site for Children's Surgery.

After an independent review of Doernbecher’s approach to quality and safety, the American College of Surgeons verified the high level of our achievements in our surgery and trauma areas. At Doernbecher, we’ve tailored our care and facilities to meet the needs of our smallest patients. For example, Doernbecher has:

  • The only pediatric operating rooms in the Oregon dedicated exclusively to kids. Because we understand kids are different than adults, all the medical professionals in our surgical area specialize in pediatrics. Every aspect is designed with children in mind, from the equipment to support services.
  • An emergency department just for kids. Again, our emergency medicine doctors and nurses specialize in treating children. We’ve created a comforting, safe, kid- and family-friendly environment for our 24/7 emergency room.

Kids deserve our best — every day. Your child's health, comfort and safety are always our top priorities. Doernbecher brings together more children’s specialists than anywhere else in the region.

NICU earns gold Beacon Award for Excellence

The neonatal intensive care unit at OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital has earned the gold Beacon Award for Excellence. The national award, given in February 2019 by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, recognizes the highest level of patient care and outcomes.

Doernbecher’s NICU is the only one on the West Coast with gold status. That makes it a role model for excellent patient and family care, according to Lisa Riggs, AACN president.

An expert panel scored the NICU in:

  • Leadership structures and systems
  • Staffing and staff engagement
  • Communication and best practices
  • Evidence-based practices
  • Patient outcomes

TrueNorth award goes to OHSU Doernbecher

The Competency & Credentialing Institute (CCI), one of the world's largest specialty nursing certification boards, awarded OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital as the 2016 TrueNorth winner. It recognizes facilities whose "true north" guides the nursing staff to be lifelong learners, models of excellent practice and continuous advocates for superb patient care and nursing practice. Doernbecher Children's Hospital boasts an 89% CNOR certification rate, one of the highest in the nation.

Life-support program earns top designation

Doernbecher Children’s Hospital was again named a Center of Excellence in Life Support in 2019, recognizing the high quality of our ECMO program. We have held this top designation from the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization since 2013.

ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) is a life-sustaining therapy that temporarily takes over for the heart and lungs. A machine adds oxygen to the blood, then pumps it through the body.

The Extracorporeal Life Support Organization recognizes programs for high achievement in:

  • Quality and outcomes
  • Training and education
  • Continuous review and improvement
  • Family education and participation
