About me

Dr. Gilhooly is a neonatologist in the Doernbecher Neonatal Care Center. His clinical interests are mother-infant co-sleeping and the outcomes of water births/labors. He has received recognition as one of Portland's best doctors in neonatology for five years. Dr. Gilhooly received his medical degree in 1980 from the University of Hawaii, John A. Burns School of Medicine, followed by residencies in family medicine and pediatrics at OHSU. He completed his fellowship in neonatal-perinatal medicine at OHSU in 1986. He is board certified in both pediatrics and neonatal-perinatal medicine, and is meeting requirements for maintenance of certification by the American Board of Pediatrics.

Outside of his clinical practice, Dr. Gilhooly is a career educator. He was director of the Pediatric Residency Program at Doernbecher Children's Hospital for 15 years from 1993-2008. He received the Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) in 2003, in recognition of his achievements as residency program director. In 2004 he was awarded membership in the Gold Humanism Honor Society and in 2010 received the Robert S. Holm Award from the Association of Pediatric Program Directors for his leadership and mentoring of pediatric program directors.

Dr. Gilhooly is serving on the Pediatric Residency Review Committee of the ACGME and will serve as chair of the committee beginning in 2011. He is also chair-elect of the Organization of Program Director Associations. Nationally he provides workshops and lectures on medical education and professionalism.

Dr. Gilhooly shares with his wife, Jennifer A. Gilhooly, a pediatric nurse practitioner, an interest in generational differences and their impact on the academic and clinical practice environment.
