Dr. Howard Sandler, New Department Chair
OHSU School of Medicine Dean Nathan Selden, M.D., Ph.D., has named Howard M. Sandler, M.D., M.S., FASTRO, FASCO, as chair for the Department of Radiation Medicine, effective Jan. 1, 2026. Coincident with this appointment, Sandler will assume the role of associate director for radiation medicine in the Knight Cancer Institute.
Sandler comes to OHSU from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he is professor of radiation oncology, chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology and the Ronald H. Bloom Family Chair in Cancer Therapeutics. He is also the recent past president of the American Society for Radiation Oncology.
Sandler received his medical degree from the University of Connecticut and completed his residency and training at the University of Pennsylvania. His specialty area is radiotherapy and chemotherapy for prostate cancer. He recently led an NIH-funded clinical trial to investigate novel radiation targeting strategies for prostate cancer. Sandler’s studies also include evaluating the quality of life of prostate cancer patients following surgery and radiation therapy.
The School of Medicine wishes to thank Arthur Hung, M.D., for his service as interim chair of radiation medicine for the last four years. Hung has provided stability for the department, while closely collaborating with Knight Cancer Institute leaders during a time of significant growth and change. He has also contributed to the Department of Radiation Medicine’s reputation as one of the region’s leading radiotherapy service providers. Dr. Hung will remain in the Department of Radiation Medicine as an associate professor.
