The Department of Radiation Medicine offers an array of education and training opportunities. We offer opportunities for students to learn about the cutting edge of radiation technologies used in treating patients with various illnesses, in this rapidly growing field within medicine. We are currently host two residency programs (radiation oncology and medical physics), a medical physics graduate program, and participate in the medical student clerkship.

Medical Student Education
The Radiation Medicine Student Interest Group (RMSIG) is organized by students and faculty to provide information about the field of radiation medicine. The specific aims of RMSIG include, providing early and intimate exposure to this rapidly developing field within medicine, providing opportunities for student research, and developing strong mentorship from practicing doctors.
The RMSIG is open to all students, who desire to learn how cutting edge radiation-modalities are used to treat patients including high school students, undergraduate students, and graduate students.
The department utilizes over 17,000 square feet of space on OHSU's main campus. The department currently has two Elekta Versa HD linear accelerators, a Varian TrueBeam linear accelerator, and a Tomotherapy HD unit are used to provide external beam electron and photon radiotherapy. Image guidance consists of onboard-imagers at all LINACs with both kV-kV, cone beam CT and MVCT capabilities. Calypso radio frequency beacon localization, BrainLab ExacTrac fluoroscopy and optical guidance imaging is utilized as part of a full service image guidance program. We have a Philips Brilliance BigBore CT scanner with respiratory gating capabilities for 4D CT based simulation. We also have available a 4D PET CT scanner with in our department that can be utilized for biologic functional treatment planning. External beam treatment systems consists of Eclipse, Pinnacle, Monaco and BrainLab Iplan system. These systems are used for CT-based 3D treatment planning, inverse modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), volumetric-modulated arc radiotherapy (VMAT), dynamic conformal arc therapy, stereotactic body radiotherapy, Linac-based radiosurgery, total body irradiation and total skin electron-beam therapy. The department uses high-dose rate (HDR) Iridium-192 for the majority of its brachytherapy needs. Radioactive Iodine-125 seeds and Iridium-192 are ordered for individual cases as needed. We have an active I-125 eye plaque brachytherapy program for choroidal melanomas with the Casey Eye Institute. We have a interstitial brachytherapy program which includes therapy for prostate cancer, soft tissue sarcoma and even for lung cancers. Learn more about our equipment here.
