Perinatology Maternal Cardiac Program

Dr. Emmanuelle Pare and Dr. Abigail Khan meet with a patient.

Most women with heart conditions can have safe, successful pregnancies and deliveries when teamed with knowledgeable and experienced providers. The Maternal Cardiac Program at OHSU's Center for Women's Health brings together all the resources for the best results in one place, the first and only program in the state to focus on the unique challenges of managing heart conditions and pregnancy. Our team can support you through the full process, from pre-pregnancy planning to post-partum recovery, or meet you where you are in your pregnancy journey.

Pregnancy and cardiac monitoring: All your care in one clinic

The Maternal Cardiac Program brings all the doctors to you in the same clinic location. Your cardiologist and obstetrician work together to create a pregnancy and treatment plan. All of our doctors and staff have unique expertise in their fields through their years of experience working with mothers with heart conditions.

You can expect:

  • To have the help of a nurse coordinator to schedule and streamline appointments and tests.
  • To have access to all of the most current equipment for cardiac, maternal and fetal testing and monitoring, including cardiac MRI.

Collaborative care with local providers

Many women travel from long distances to be seen at OHSU's Maternal Cardiac Program, but wish to continue their ongoing care with a local provider and to deliver at a nearby hospital. We support these goals whenever possible and are happy to collaborate on care.

Pre-pregnancy counseling

If you have a known heart condition, we strongly encourage and provide pregnancy counseling to review the possible risks and options. This early planning is also a chance to get you as healthy as possible before the pregnancy to improve the experience for you and for baby.

Post-partum follow-through

At OHSU, we follow all of our new mothers for six weeks after delivery, but we follow our heart patients for longer when needed. The changes and stresses in a woman's body from pregnancy can take several months to return to normal, so we closely monitor our heart patients and help you make a smooth transition to a cardiology team for ongoing care.
