Advanced Cardiac Imaging Fellowship
Our one-year Advanced Cardiac Imaging Fellowship is the only advanced cardiac imaging fellowship in Oregon. You will learn and work as part of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine and the Knight Cardiovascular Institute (KCVI).
We offer a high degree of flexibility and tailor your experience to your needs. Our fellowship leaders will meet with you throughout the year to make sure you meet your goals and are well prepared for the next step of your career.
Fellowship objectives
The goal of the fellowship is to train outstanding clinicians in multimodality cardiac imaging.
Upon completion of the fellowship, you will have Level III proficiency in at least two modalities of cardiac imaging. Upon graduation, you’ll be able to independently interpret echocardiography, CT, MRI and PET/nuclear imaging and lead an imaging laboratory.
Fellowship curriculum
You’ll work with specialists in:
- Cardiology (including general, adult congenital and structural teams)
- Cardiothoracic radiology
- Cardiothoracic surgery
- Vascular surgery and medicine
As a fellow, you’ll gain hands-on experience in the full spectrum of advanced cardiac imaging modalities, including:
- Echocardiography
- Computed tomography (CT)
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- Positron emission tomography (PET)/nuclear imaging
Echocardiography
The echocardiography experience goes beyond general cardiology training. You’ll acquire advanced skills in:
- 3-dimensional imaging
- Strain imaging
- Interventional echocardiography
- Adult congenital echocardiography
- Contrast echocardiography
You’ll also participate in structural echocardiography procedures such as:
- TAVR
- MitraClip
- ASD closure
- Valve-in-valve
- Paravalvular leak closure
- Alcohol septal ablation
Cardiac CT
In cardiac CT, you’ll be part of a multidisciplinary team and present at structural heart and adult congenital heart disease conferences. Training in cardiac CT includes:
- Coronary imaging (CAC scoring and CTA)
- Pre- and post-procedural interventional imaging (TAVR, TMVR, TTVR, ASD, LAAO)
- Adult congenital heart disease imaging
Cardiac MRI
You’ll participate in protocoling, acquisition supervision and reporting. The cardiac MRI experience includes imaging of:
- Cardiomyopathies (hypertrophic, genetic, sarcoidosis)
- Myocarditis
- Cardiac tumors and masses
- Pericardial and valvular disease
- Adult congenital heart disease
Nuclear cardiology
In nuclear cardiology, training includes:
- SPECT and PET myocardial perfusion imaging
- PET imaging of inflammatory cardiomyopathies
- Amyloid imaging, with exposure to a novel MRI/PET scanner
All KCVI fellows take part in regular multidisciplinary conferences, research conferences, didactic sessions and KCVI grand rounds.
Research
You will carry out a scholarly project under the direction of one of the imaging attendings, with the expectation that it will result in a presentation at a national meeting and/or a publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
You will also be required to carry out a quality improvement project related to echocardiography under the direction of the director of the Echocardiography Laboratory.
