Sports Cardiology and Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Fellowship
The Sports Cardiology and Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) Fellowship at the OHSU Knight Cardiovascular Institute is the only sports cardiology fellowship on the West Coast.
Through this one-year fellowship, you’ll receive advanced subspecialty training in the care of patients with HCM and other cardiovascular diseases commonly seen in athletes and physically active individuals. You’ll also work in the OHSU Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Center, a leader in clinical care and research for HCM.
As a Sports Cardiology and HCM fellow, you’ll take part in screening electrocardiogram programs that evaluate up to 800 athletes annually at partner universities. You’ll also become part of the OHSU sports cardiology program, which provides care for athletes and members of:
- NHL Scouting Combine
- University of Portland Pilots
- Portland State University Vikings
- Oregon State University Beavers
- University of Oregon Ducks
- Lewis & Clark College River Otters
- Pacific University Boxers
- Portland Winterhawks
- Portland Fire & Rescue
- Portland Police Bureau
Fellowship objectives
As a fellow, you’ll develop expertise in:
- Echocardiography
- Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging
- Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET)
Bradley Petek, M.D., the director of the OHSU sports cardiology program, has integrated CPET into most new athlete appointments, giving you significant exposure. Additional opportunities are available in sports pulmonology for fellows who express clinical interest.
Additional objectives include care of athletes and physically active patients with cardiovascular disease and development of HCM-specific clinical expertise.
Fellowship curriculum
As a fellow, you’ll follow a weekly schedule that includes:
- Reviewing cases for the week and deciding which new patients in the sports cardiology and genetic cardiomyopathies clinics you wish to see
- Participating in weekly clinical meetings and biweekly/monthly educational didactics
- Working with teams in cardiology, sports medicine, pulmonology and radiology
The program also covers your travel to the American College of Cardiology’s Care of the Athletic Heart conference.
All KCVI fellows take part in regular multidisciplinary conferences, research conferences, didactic sessions and KCVI grand rounds.
Research
You’ll have opportunities to take part in numerous research studies in both sports cardiology and HCM. Program fellows may participate in:
- Multicenter research studies in sports cardiology, including the Outcomes Registry for Cardiovascular Conditions in Athletes (ORCCA)
- Clinical trials and research focused on HCM and genetic cardiomyopathies
