Bates-Reitsma AHA announcement 2021

Congratulations to Novella Bates and Stephanie Reitsma on their American Heart Association Predoctoral Fellowship award

Novella Bates and Stephanie Reitsma, 4th year PhD candidates in the Biomedical Engineering graduate program, have received the American Heart Association Predoctoral Fellowship award for 2021-2023. This award is granted to enhance the integrated research of promising trainees, who intend to pursue careers as scientists, improving global health in the areas of cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, and brain health. Novella Bates’ project is designed to interrogate the role of blood coagulation protein, factor XII, in medical device-induced thrombosis, with the overall goal of aiding the development of a safe and effective FXII-targeted therapy. Stephanie Reitsma’s project will provide mechanistic knowledge of the interaction between the blood cells platelets and coagulation factor (F)XI and may provide novel mechanistic insights for the development of efficacious anti-thrombotic treatments that are uncoupled from bleeding risks.
