Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming primary care, yet most clinicians remain uncertain about how to navigate this change. This session demystifies AI—covering core concepts including machine learning, generative AI, and ambient technologies—through a practical, case-based lens. Participants will explore five real-world use cases of AI in primary care: from summarizing complex patient records and enhancing clinical decision-making to generating personalized instructions, streamlining documentation, and supporting continuous virtual care. Attendees will also examine critical implementation challenges, such as bias, performance variability, and environmental impact, and engage with practical, ethical strategies for integrating AI into practice responsibly. With a focus on real-world application, this session empowers clinicians to take meaningful first steps toward adopting AI technologies that support quality improvement, reduce clinician burnout, and enhance patient care across the continuum.
Learning Objectives
- Explain the basics of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and generative AI.
- Identify and describe ways AI is being used in primary care.
- Summarize key challenges in integrating AI into healthcare.
- Discuss the ethical landscape of AI in clinical settings.
- Develop a plan to integrate AI in clinical practice.
