Yabing Chen, Ph.D., M.B.A., F.A.H.A., Interim Program Director of the M.D./Ph.D. Program

Welcome to the OHSU MD/PhD Program. Our mission is to train compassionate, and intellectually curious physician-scientists who will become future leaders in medicine, science, and biomedical innovation.  We are committed to supporting students throughout the full arc of training, from recruitment and early exploration to the transition between medical and graduate phases, to career development in academic medicine and beyond.

Although my own training was not through an MD/PhD pathway, I have spent much of my career mentoring graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, medical trainees, and physician-scientist scholars; and I deeply appreciate the commitment, resilience, and passion for discovery that this pathway requires. Our program is strengthened by a dedicated community of faculty leaders, mentors and by students who bring energy, collegiality, and a strong sense of purpose to everything they do. We value mentorship at multiple levels and encourage active participation through retreats, seminar series, journal clubs, career and professional development activities, and peer support. We also believe in fostering a welcoming environment where differences are respected and where opportunity can be advanced and sustained for all members of our community.

Our students thrive in a community that supports discovery, teamwork, and the integration of scientific excellence with compassionate, patient-centered care. They contribute meaningfully to the scientific and clinical communities around them, and many go on to impactful careers in academia, industry, and medicine. We hope this website gives you a sense of the people, values, and opportunities that define our program.

We are delighted by your interest in OHSU and our MD/PhD Program, and we hope you see in our community a place where you can contribute, grow, and thrive.
