The OHSU Transition to Practice Program supports clinical registered nurses as they start a new RN role at OHSU. Whether you are a new or experienced nurse, you will access tools, resources and training to help you succeed. You will also:

  • Prepare for independent practice in your new role and get training and personalized support to achieve your goals.
  • Learn from experienced RNs who are also transitioning to a new role.
  • Go at your own pace and transition to independent practice when you’re ready.
  • Learn while you work. The Transition to Practice Program takes place during your work hours and is part of your employment.
  • Access professional development support and programs to advance your nursing career at OHSU.

What is the OHSU Transition to Practice (TTP) Program?

The OHSU Transition to Practice Program assists clinical RNs as they learn a new nursing role. When you start a role that is part of this program, you will spend shifts focused on your professional development.

The program includes nurse residency and nurse fellowship learning paths. You will be part of the learning path that fits your experience and new role. You and your colleagues will receive training, resources and opportunities to support each other, build skills and gain confidence as nursing professionals. You will also get individual support and access career development courses to help you grow.

Who participates in the Transition to Practice Program?

New and experienced nurses can participate in the program along one of three learning paths.

New graduate nurse residency learning path

This path is for new graduates entering the nursing profession and nurses with less than one year experience outside of OHSU. Participants complete the Vizient/American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Nurse Residency Program™ (NRP) with peers of similar experience.

Specialty nurse fellowship learning path

This path is for experienced nurses who are new to OHSU or internal transfers and transitioning to a new specialty care area. On this path, you may be part of a cohort, working with other nurses like you.

Experienced nurse fellowship learning path

This path is for experienced clinical nurses transitioning to a new care area aligned with their expertise. They may be new to OHSU or internal transfers. This short, focused learning path is linked to open positions.

How do I know which Transition to Practice Program path is right for me?

Your OHSU manager will assign you a learning path and start date based on:

  • The timing of your hire.
