OHSU research leads to FDA approval for brain cancer imaging

OHSU researchers helped secure FDA approval for ferumoxytol (FERABRIGHT™) as a contrast agent to detect and monitor brain tumors. The work began nearly 30 years ago in the lab of Edward Neuwelt, M.D., and was carried out by the Neuro-Oncology Blood-Brain Barrier Program team. Key contributors include Lisa Muir, M.P.A.,H.A., C.C.R.P., Ramon Barajas Jr., M.D., Laszlo Szidonya, M.D., Ph.D., Amy Huddleston, M.P.A., H.A., Leslie Muldoon, Ph.D., and Rochelle Fu, Ph.D.

OHSU Technology Transfer helped move the research from the lab to FDA approval, making this new imaging option available to physicians.

Intellectual Property 101: Key Concepts for Researchers

Join us on Thursday, March 26, from 12-1 p.m. PT, for the next session of OHSU Innovates Foundations: Navigating Research to Impact, a virtual seminar series supporting researchers at all career stages. This session, “Intellectual Property 101,” will introduce key IP concepts and strategies for protecting research discoveries.

Patent attorney Janina Malone, J.D., A.M., of Lee & Hayes P.C. and recent OHSU neuroscience graduate Cole Brashaw, Ph.D., will share insights from both legal and researcher perspectives on building IP awareness and integrating it into research planning.

OHSU Innovates ASCEND Award

Advancing Social Change, Empowerment, and New Discoveries (ASCEND) Award

The ASCEND Award supports OHSU community members in developing innovative solutions that address practical challenges and advance commercialization efforts. The program aims to broaden access to resources and opportunities that help move projects from concept to impact. Awards of up to $4,000 are granted to cover expenses such as materials, travel, and mentorship.

Applications are accepted throughout the year and reviewed quarterly. The next deadline is March 31, 2026.
