As in most of the country, buyers and consumers of health care in Oregon face an increasingly consolidated health care market, most recently illustrated in a pending merger between CareOregon, a primary Medicaid coverage provider, and the Providence health care system.

CHSE Director John McConnell visited the Oregon House Committee on Health Care to share recent research on where Oregon sits nationally with health care prices and utilization as well as on the effects of different kinds of consolidation within health care systems. Compared with other states, he noted, research shows that service prices in Oregon run high, possibly because provider organizations have relatively more market power than insurers.  Researchers offer several potential policy strategies.
