Clinical

The Oregon Pain Management Commission (OPMC) recently released a new version of the “Changing the Conversation About Pain” module, a continuing education course that will be required every two years for all Oregon licensed clinicians beginning January 1, 2022.

Dr. Catriona Buist was one of the six clinical experts who collaborated with the Oregon Pain Management Commission (OPMC), Oregon Health Authority, Public Health, and Providence Health & Safety to develop the accompanying Oregon Patient Pain Education Toolkit and Oregon Clinician Pain Education Toolkit.

The Toolkits contains 8 modules: understanding pain, sleep, nutrition, activity, mood, social support, flare-up management, and medications, and includes patient interviews with people with lived experience of persistent pain.  Each module has a short video and handout to use in shared decision-making conversations with patients (in person or virtually). The goal of these tools is to provide updated information on the biopsychosocial and neuroplastic nature of pain, so that all clinicians are creating a consistent message in patient care.  Improved pain education helps patients to understand the changeable nature of pain and the key role of self-efficacy and self-care in a treatment plan.

In addition to the Toolkits linked below, please see Oregon Pain Guidance for resources related to pain management, upcoming conferences, pain treatment guidelines, opioid conversion calculator, assessment tools, provider resources.
