Clinical Care

A care provider chats with an eczema patient

World-class expertise in treating and researching eczema (atopic dermatitis)

The term eczema refers to a group of skin conditions in which the skin is red, itchy, irritated, and can result in blistering, weeping or peeling.  Atopic dermatitis (also known as AD) is the most common type of eczema, thus these two terms are often used interchangeably.

Eczema is a relatively common condition but can be very difficult to treat and maintain due to the unpredictable and incureable nature of the disease. Living with eczema can be even more difficult, as its symptoms can be very distracting, painful and emotionally damaging.

What to expect

Our care team will work with you to identify and diagnose your condition. While there are no cures for eczema, we can attempt to manage it as best as possible.

All of our dermatology providers are trained to identify and treat eczema. Furthermore, we have providers who specialize in the treatment and research of the condition, including internationally renowned eczema expert Eric Simpson, M.D., M.C.R. Because each case of eczema can be so varied, finding a personalized care plan that will work for your and your lifestyle is critical. Our goal is to work with you to come up with a care plan that is realistic and effective in managing your skin.

Engage in eczema research

As part of advancing knowledge and treatment of eczema, our department is very active in clinical research. Clinical trials are an organized activity to learn more about a problem, a treatment option or a disease. Clinical trials can provide patients with alternate care options, while helping researchers study new and improved ways to combat disease.

For more information, including any currently enrolling trials in atopic dermatitis (eczema), please visit our Skin Condition Clinical Trials page.

OHSU has a legacy of pushing the boundaries of eczema knowledge. Drs. Frances Storrs, M.D., and Jon Hanifin, M.D. were two of the true pioneers of eczema treatment and research, both earning the highest award from the American Academy of Dermatology for their career's achievements. We continue to honor this legacy under the direction of Dr. Eric Simpson, who leads OHSU's dermatology clinical trials and directs OHSU's CLEAR Eczema Center.
