The MedTech Alliance Showcase connects
investors, industry partners, and community collaborators with OHSU inventors
and technologies. At the 2016 event, attendees will had the opportunity to network
and learn more about OHSU medical technologies, including early-stage inventions
that have a realistic chance for commercialization. The welcome address was
given by John Ma, M.D., F.A.C.E.P.,
professor and chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine. Four presenters took the stage to showcase their technologies. The evening commenced
with a poster session during the evening reception.

Welcome Address Speaker
John Ma, M.D., F.A.C.E.P.
Professor and Chair of the OHSU Department of Emergency Medicine
John Ma has served as Professor and Chair of Emergency Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University since January, 2007. He served as the President of the Professional Staff (Professional Board Chair) for OHSU Healthcare between 2011-13. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the American Board of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Ma has edited 16 reference textbooks, including Ma and Mateer's Emergency Ultrasound and Tinitnalli's Emergency Medicine textbook, and his textbooks have been published in 12 languages. He has focused his research primarily on the applications of ultrasound in diagnosing injuries in trauma patients. He has been the recipient of four Teacher of the Year awards and the SAEM Excellence in Ultrasound Education Award.
Theodore Hobbs, D.V.M., M.C.R.

Theodore Hobbs received his DVM from Kansas State University and his Master's degree in Clinical Research from OHSU. He has over 22 years of surgical and medical experience in a variety of species. Since 2000, he has been at the Oregon National Primate Research Center where he is the Head of Surgery, overseeing a staff of 9 that performs over 8,000 procedures annually. Dr. Hobbs' research focuses on the development of novel surgical procedures, models, and techniques in collaboration with over 50 principle investigators. His major research interests are blood volume measurement and outcome predictors in trauma medicine.
David Spiro, M.D., M.P.H.
Co-founder and Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Spiro went to UCSF for medical school. After spending 5 years on the Oregon Coast as a general pediatrician, he sought out a fellowship in Pediatric to pursue his ambition to teach medicine. Dr. Spiro recognized a need to improve medical education in 2003;he started to create and teach with brief, video cases in the Yale Pediatric ER as a way to improve education for the students he taught. Dr. Spiro used video as a means to educate the Doernbecher Board to raise 5 million dollars to start the Pediatric Emergency Department at OHSU. He also co-founded the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship at OHSU in 2009. In 2012 he co-founded ReelDx with Bill Kelly, a co-founder of Web MD. During this time, his team has published 650 real patient video cases from over 40 contributors which are peer reviewed.
Greg Jones, Ph.D., M.B.A.
First Ascent Biomedical, LLC
Greg Jones, Ph.D., M.B.A., has 20-years of experience working in industry, government and academics. Greg currently serves as the associate director of the Scientific Computing and Imaging (SCI) Institute and the assistant vice president for research at the University of Utah. Just prior to these positions Dr. Jones was the executive director of research at the University of Utah's Moran Eye Center. From 2005 to 2007, Dr. Jones served as the science advisor to Utah Governor, Jon Huntsman and as a managing director of the Governor's Office of Economic Development where he and his team focused on creating policies and programs to aid technology transfer from the Utah research universities. Previously, Dr. Jones was a principle consultant in the StorageTek Medical Group. Dr. Jones has been instrumental in the creation of several technology companies that are based on university technologies, these include Visual Influence, Inc., RayScale, Inc., iVeena, LLC and VisTrails, Inc.
Xiangshu Xiao, Ph.D.
Novel lamin-binding ligands for the treatment of triple negative breast cancer
Dr. Xiangshu Xiao is an Associate Professor of Physiology and Pharmacology within the Program in Chemical Biology at Oregon Health & Science University. Dr. Xiao is interested in developing novel small molecule inhibitors of aberrant signaling proteins in cancer cells. These inhibitors can be starting points for potential cancer therapeutics and research tools to further understand the fundamental biology of targeted proteins. His lab has developed first-in-class small molecule inhibitors of CREB (cyclic-adenosine monophosphate response element binding protein) and nuclear lamins. Both of these inhibitors showed robust anti-breast cancer activity in various preclinical cancer models. These inhibitors also helped him and others in the field to uncover previously unrecognized regulation of these proteins in cancer cells. He has 3 issued patents and more than 35 peer-reviewed publications.

Presenter: Paul Cordo, Ph.D.
Paul Cordo graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1970 with a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering. He served 4 years in the US Army as a Medical Supply Officer, after which he obtained a Ph.D. in Physiology from the State University of New York Upstate Medical Center. In 1979, he joined the Neurological Sciences Institute (NSI) in Portland as a post-doctoral fellow, working in the area of human motor control. In 1998, as Institute Director, he merged NSI with OHSU. During the 1990s, his research transitioned from basic to applied neuroscience, and he founded a medical device company (AMES Technology, Inc.) in 2004. He is currently Chief Technology officer at AMES.

Presenter: Thomas Jacob, Ph.D.
Dr. Thomas Jacob earned his Masters in Biophysics, and Ph.D. in Biotechnology from MKU, India. He completed his Doctoral thesis in 2002 with DAAD scholarship from Max Planck Institute in Germany. Dr. Jacob's research achievements at OHSU center for Biomarker Discovery led to the formation of a startup company, Proteogenix Inc., where he continued as a lead assay development scientist for 5 years. Dr. Jacob is currently a Senior Research Associate at the OHSU Department of Biomedical Engineering. He works towards developing protein assay technologies for cancer and infectious diseases. Dr. Jacob has authored many peer reviewed research articles and patents.

Presenter: John Muschler, Ph.D.
Dr. Muschler has been a Research Associate Professor at the Oregon Health & Science University since 2011, with previous positions held in Berkeley and San Francisco, California. For nearly 20 years, Dr. Muschler has been conducting fundamental cell biology and medical research focused on the mechanisms of cell adhesion to their surroundings, and on the changes in these mechanisms that arise in diseases such as muscular dystrophies and cancers. Results from these studies are now being exploited for the creation of cancer-targeting agents, taking advantage of novel protein trafficking pathways for the selective delivery of therapeutic and imaging agents into the cancer cell interior.
Presenters: Andrew Hadd, Ph.D. and Sumit Punj, Ph.D.
Andrew Hadd, Ph.D. is a test development Research Associate at the Knight Diagnostic Lab. His focus is the development and validation of next-generation sequencing tests for inherited disorders and cancer predisposition;this also includes custom assays for translational research projects and whole exome analysis. He has interests in molecular diagnostics, translational research, and commercializing technologies for hereditary diseases. He completed his Ph.D. in biochemistry and molecular biology focusing on enzyme and RNA reengineering for synthetic biology applications.
Sumit Punj, Ph.D. is a Senior Research Associate and a Clinical Molecular Genetics Fellow in the ABMGG accredited program at Oregon Health and Science University Knight Diagnostic Laboratories (KDL). His graduate training was in Microbiology, Cell and Molecular Biology with additional post-doctoral training in Transplantation Immunology, Immunopharmacology and Immunotoxicology. He specializes in the analysis and interpretation of germline variants and is involved in several clinical genomic and pharmacogenetic research projects at the KDL. He is also focused on developing and implementing next generation sequencing-based testing in the clinical laboratory.

Presenters: Jane Conner, M.B.A., C.P.A. and Jennifer Conner, M.B.A.
Jane Conner, M.B.A., C.P.A., has been a key contributor to the success of many companies over her 36-year career. For the past 20 years, she has focused on strategic planning and new product development, primarily within the healthcare industry. She has been an active participant, providing hands-on guidance to early-stage companies developing innovative products. She has participated in due diligence efforts and negotiations leading to successful exits totaling in excess of $143 million.
Jennifer Conner, M.B.A., brings her strong communications background and start-up company experience to Motiosens where she guides business and financial processes. She has worked primarily with start-ups in the medical device field, providing her services across the ever-changing roles of HR, budgeting, grant administration, and communications. Jennifer is adding to her skills as she completes coursework towards her M.B.A., with a concentration in Marketing.
