Jeni Johnstone, PhD

Jeanette “Jeni” Johnstone, PhD, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, she/her

Jeni was born and raised in California. She completed her BA at UC Davis, and her MA in Counseling Psychology at Santa Clara University before moving to Christchurch, New Zealand. There, she completed a PhD at University of Otago School of Medicine looking at the impact of childhood adversity on outcomes in adult depression. While completing her Clinical Psychology training at the University of Canterbury, she worked in Professor Julia Rucklidge’s Nutrition and Mental Health Lab on micronutrient supplementation research in adults and children with ADHD.

In 2014, Jeni moved to Portland to work at OHSU with Dr. Joel Nigg, with an eye towards replicating the New Zealand micronutrient research. She completed an NIH Postdoctoral Fellowship in Neurology looking at mindfulness for adolescent stress. 
Today she is a practicing Clinical Psychologist in the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. She directs a family therapy clinic as part of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, serving the mental health needs of local families. She has a dual appointment as a Research Investigator at the Helfgott Research Institute in Portland, as she complete an NIH Clinical Research Fellowship.
 
Her current research focuses on BSM supplementation in populations with ADHD, mood issues, and aggression. Jeni is the lead principle investigator on the Micronutrients for ADHD in Youth, the “MADDY” Study, a three-site, international, randomized controlled trial for children who have ADHD and irritable mood. Through an examination of participant biological samples, she and her collaborators are examining the micronutrients’ biological signature, and potential mechanisms of action, in addition to looking at behavioral changes.
