Hartford Center of Gerontological Excellence

Founding member of the National Hartford Center of Gerontological Nursing Excellence

The Hartford Center of Gerontological Excellence (HCGE) at OHSU is a community of students, educators, clinicians and researchers.  These leaders seek to actively improve the health and well-being of older people and their families.

In March 2000, The John A. Hartford Foundation Trustees endorsed an initiative to Build Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity. They did this in response to the critical need for geriatric nurses at all levels. In 2001, the OHSU School of Nursing was one of the first five, top-tier institutions designated as a "center of geriatric nursing excellence to enhance the schools’ infrastructure and capacity to grow the next generation of researchers and leaders (Retrieved from https://www.nhcgne.org/about 5/6/2021)."

Our Hartford Center is a member of the National Hartford Center of Gerontological Nursing Excellence. As a benefit of membership, all OHSU affiliates have access to learning resources, opportunities for  leadership development and collaboration with like-minded professionals. Please contact Marilyn Sanguinetti for our OHSU member log-in information.

Giving to the HCGE

Nurses comprise the largest single component of hospital staff and are considered the most trusted professionals (Gallup.com). They are the primary providers of hospital patient care and deliver most of the nation's long-term care.

"By 2030, all baby boomers will be older than age 65. This will expand the size of the older population so that 1 in every 5 residents will be retirement age" (retrieved on 2/11/2020).

Supporting the Hartford Center helps to educate geriatric nursing faculty today. Thanks to your support, they can prepare the next generation of nurses with the high levels of geriatric competence needed to care for tomorrow's elders.
