Oregon Health & Science University is Oregon's only academic health center and is nationally distinguished as a research university dedicated solely to advancing health sciences. This allows us to focus on discoveries to prevent and cure disease, on education that prepares the health care and health science professionals of the future, and on patient care that incorporates the latest advances.

Overview

As the state’s only public health and research university Oregon Health & Science University is the place where healing, teaching and discovery come together. OHSU educates and trains the health care professionals that Oregon communities need and provides care to those Oregonians with the most difficult health challenges. OHSU is a unique resource for Oregonians where OHSU faculty work every day discovering new ways to help save lives.

Graduate Medical Education is one of the central missions of Oregon Health & Science University.  GME training programs are offered in virtually all fields of medicine, as well as dental residencies.

Detailed information regarding GME for a particular program or residency can be obtained by contacting the appropriate program director or coordinator.

Teaching Facilities

OHSU and the VA Portland Health Care System are the major clinical teaching facilities of OHSU for undergraduate and graduate medical education . The patient care and teaching programs at the university and the Portland VA are under the direction and supervision of OHSU faculty.  House staff participate in the care of patients in the hospitals and gain additional experience in community hospitals, which have affiliated teaching programs under the direction of the OHSU School of Medicine.

GME Expansion

Graduate Medical Education plans to increase the number of residency slots in the state by 100 in coming years, including establishing  new programs at Hillsboro Medical Center, and having OHSU residents rotate in rural communities including Grants Pass, Enterprise, Coos Bay and Astoria.

GME Office

The office of Graduate Medical Education coordinates house staff appointments and assignments.  The office also assists in assuring excellence in the training programs and in serving prospective, current and past residents and fellows.

Associate Dean and Designated Institutional Official

Joyce Hollander-Rodriguez

Joyce Hollander-Rodriguez, M.D., serves as the Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education and is the Designated Institutional Official for the OHSU School of Medicine.

Dr. Hollander-Rodriguez earned her medical degree from the OHSU School of Medicine in 2000 and did her residency in family medicine at Cascades East, including serving as chief resident. She joined the OHSU family medicine faculty in 2003 and moved into leadership of the OHSU Cascades East program in 2009, becoming program director in 2011. In 2015, she became regional associate dean for the OHSU Campus for Rural Health in Klamath.

As regional associate dean, she worked with learners from the MD, PA, dentistry, pharmacy, advanced practice nursing, and human nutrition programs to increase clinical experiences in rural settings, add educational experiences addressing the context and challenges of rural health, while working together on community-engaged projects.

As program director for Cascades East Family Medicine Residency, she grew the clinical and educational program, increased faculty scholarly activity, and helped develop a unique program for fourth-year medical students that supports the undergraduate medical education to graduate medical education transition. The Department of Family Medicine will work with the GME office to name an interim program director for the Cascades East Family Medicine Residency Program who will serve during the selection process for a new program director.

Over the past four years, she has served as co-principal investigator for the American Medical Association Re-imagining Residency grant, COMPADRE (California -Oregon Medical Partnership to Address Disparities in Residency Education and Health). This partnership between UC Davis and OHSU has led to work across GME programs in multiple specialties and health systems between Portland and Sacramento.

“Fostering a culture of person-centered care in GME has been an important cornerstone of my approach to residency leadership. Person-centered care takes the concept of patient-centeredness a step farther to looking at the whole person and includes all the people on the health care team - viewing the resident as clinician, learner, and whole person. As we move into a post-pandemic world, it is important for GME to bring a vision for how we learn, heal, and innovate. I am honored to have this role and to work with such an excellent leadership team and staff to build on and share this vision.”  - Joyce-Hollander Rodriguez
