Technology, Systems and Data Science
Building new tools to push the frontier of cancer research
We use the latest tools, datasets and methods to study cancer in more detail. This helps us pioneer new approaches to detect cancer early and develop novel treatments.
At OHSU, the Technology, Systems and Data Science team uses the latest technology — and builds it. We fuse engineering, cancer-systems biology and artificial intelligence to power high-impact research.
What you can expect
When you join us as faculty, a trainee or a team member, you will:
- Tackle complex challenges in cancer biology, early detection and interception, and translational research
- Use wet-lab experiments and computational models to turn biological insights into clinical strategies
- Develop platforms, analytical pipelines, novel assays and computational methods that are reproducible and scalable
- Use cutting-edge technology, such as next-generation mass spectrometry
- Find a culture of open and equitable collaboration, mentorship and training
You’ll work with experts in:
- Biomedical data science
- Clinical sciences
- Experimental biology
- Precision biofabrication
- Systems biology
Our research
You’ll find studies that open opportunities to better understand cancer, find it early and treat it. Here are some examples.
How cancer works: We’ve learned that stress-related nerves may fuel pancreatic cancer growth.
Computational biology: We develop machine learning and statistical methods to better understand how DNA is organized in cancerous and healthy cells.
Treatments: Our team has:
- Mapped molecular interactions in bacteria as a starting point to developing drugs for cancer and other conditions
- Tested new drug combinations to address treatment resistance
- Created a nanoparticle that could increase the safety and effectiveness of ultrasound-based treatments
We partner with specialized centers and initiatives, including:
Resources
You’ll have access to infrastructure that includes:
- Computational platforms
- Bioinformatics pipelines
- High-throughput sequencing
- Proteomics facilities
- Clinical and population-based biospecimens
