Webinar: Supporting Sexuality Education for AAC Users

Presented by Sex and Disability Educator Evan Sweeney, this free webinar is designed to build educator capacity to deliver inclusive, accessible, and trauma-informed sexuality education for students who use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), including nonspeaking and semi-speaking individuals.

This training is part of the UCEDD’s ongoing support for educators in Oregon who are implementing the Friendships and Dating (FDP) and Sexuality for All Abilities (SfAA) curricula. The training is designed to strengthen high school and transition teachers’ ability to meet the diverse needs of their students.

Intended audience: 

High school and transition teachers, including those who have been trained in the Oregon Friendships and Dating Program (FDP) or Sexuality for All Abilities (SfAA) programs.

Learning objectives:

Understand AAC and communication needs:

  • Describe various types of AAC systems and tools.
  • Recognize challenges faced by nonspeaking and semi-speaking individuals.
  • Understand the importance of presuming competence and how AAC can support authentic communication in educational settings. 

Adapt sexuality education for AAC users:

  • Identify key concepts and essential topics in sexuality education for AAC users.
  • Adapt instructional materials and activities to meet the needs of AAC users.
  • Address diverse student experiences, including how to be inclusive of LGBTQ+ students who use AAC. 

Support students with trauma histories:

  • Explore approaches for supporting nonspeaking students who may have experienced abuse.
  • Identify strategies for creating a safe, supportive, and responsive classroom environment.

About the presenter:

Evan Sweeney, a 42-year-old disabled male who identifies as genderqueer, works primarily as a freelance writer and sex educator. His topics include disabilities, sex, gender, and queer culture. He has been running sex and disability workshops for more than 15 years, and he got started with it after realizing how little good, sex-positive information there was for those with disabilities.
