Specimen Requirements:

3 mL blood in a LAVENDER top (EDTA) tube. Keep at room temperature. Room temperature samples are good for up to 24 hours.

Results from a concurrent WBC with Differential must be received, or it will be added and charged to viable specimens.

Pediatric Specimen Requirements:

1 mL blood in a LAVENDER top (EDTA) tube. Keep at room temperature. Room temperature samples are good for up to 24 hours.

Comments:

Decreased CD4 cell number is consistent with HIV infection but is not diagnostic. Inverted CD4/CD8 ratio can be seen in many viral infections.
