Beth Fee; Grants and Contracts Coordinator
Beth comes to Anesthesia from the Department of Neurosurgery where she provided administrative and grant support to the research division. Beth has over 15 years' experience in pre and post award management of both basic science and clinical research projects. In addition to her work at OHSU, she is a senior at Portland State University where she is studying accounting, she is helping her boyfriend develop a new start-up business and she is also trustee for both of her elderly parents. In her spare time, she likes to sew, cook and garden. Beth lives with her mother and son, two Pomeranian dogs and a cat.
Karl Koenig, Financial Analyst II
Karl joined the APOM team in October 2013 as a financial analyst, who assists with the billing, reporting and costing activities related to the department. Prior to joining OHSU, Karl worked for 25 years at Regency BlueCross BlueShield in a variety of accounting and finance positions. In addtion, he has a Bachelor's degree in Accounting from Oregon State University and is a CPA. Away from work, Karl spends time with his wife and two children and enjoys exercising, as well as working on home improvement projects.
Nicole Libal, BS; Laboratory Manager
Nicole Libal is a Laboratory Manager in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine (APOM). She manages the mouse breeding colonies in APOM’s laboratories and also provides surgical and technical support for ongoing pre-clinical research. She is a registered laboratory animal technician with the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) and was named 2010 Technician of the Year by the Oregon branch of AALAS.
In 2005, Nicole earned her bachelor’s in animal sciences from Oregon State University. When she takes a break from the laboratory, she enjoys reading, gardening, traveling, and camping.
Sarah Mader, BS; Assistant Laboratory Manager
Sarah is an Assistant Laboratory Manager in our department, as well as serving as a Cell Culture Specialist, working directly with Dr. Ines Koerner and serving the cell culture needs of multiple investigators in our Research Division. Her responsibilities include primary cell culture, maintaining cell lines, as well as various experiments utilizing products of cell culture.
Sarah studied biology at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon where she earned the Bachelor of Science in Biology in 2001. She subsequently accepted a position in the Department of Behavioral Neuroscience at OHSU to assist with a study of long-term behavioral patterns in rats addicted to cocaine. In this role, Sarah gained expertise in histological analysis and in a variety of microtechniques including surgical brain implantation in rats, microinjection, and microdialysis. Previously in our lab Sarah has served many roles, including offering mouse genotyping services, colony handling and performing small animal surgeries, including the MCAO model.
Jennifer Young, BS; Research Administrator
Jennifer Young joined the Research Division of the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine in 2003. She was promoted Lab Manager in 2012, for our facility at the Hatfield Research Center, one of two molecular laboratories in the department, and continues to be instrumental in the establishment and operation of the laboratory. She has played a principal role in developing experimental standards for protein chemistry and genotyping techniques widely used throughout the Research Division. She has also helped to develop key immunohistochemical techniques for studying post-ischemic processes in vivo.
Before coming to OHSU, Jennifer worked for the United States Geological Survey as a Lead Laboratory Technician studying immune response and predation in juvenile Chinook salmon and sturgeon species in the Columbia River. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology in 2002 from Washington State University.
Christine Le, Administrative Coordinator
Christine joins the research division as an Administrative Coordinator and will be a member of our departmental Faculty Administrative Support Team (FAST). In her new role, Christine will provide administrative support for the research division and clinical faculty members. Christine is from the Mitten State and is a graduate of the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Management. She comes to us with a professional background in healthcare management and marketing. When Christine's not working, you can find her at Pure Barre with her friends or exploring somewhere along the Oregon coast or Mt. Hood with her partner-in-crime, Joe. They both made the move here a few years ago and are now excited to set roots in Portland and call this place home.
