Patients on warfarin may have decreased free protein S values. Patients should be off warfarin therapy for two weeks for accurate measurement of free protein S levels. Decreased levels of free protein S are also associated with DIC, liver disease, pregnancy, and inflammatory syndromes.
Specimen Requirements:
Two full 2.7 mL LIGHT BLUE top tubes, 3.2% sodium citrate.
Specimens must be processed and frozen within 2 hours of specimen collection.
Send 2- 1mL aliquots of platelet poor plasma, samples must remain frozen during storage and shipment.
Stability is 14 days at -20 C or at –70°C for up to 12 months.

Pediatric Specimen Requirements:
One full pediatric 1.3 mL LIGHT BLUE top tube, 3.2% sodium citrate.

Send 1 600 uL aliquot of platelet poor plasma, samples must remain frozen during storage and shipment.
Stability is 14 days at -20 C or at –70°C for up to 12 months.

Male = 41.1 – 146.0%
Female = 54.7% – 123.7%

Recommended test to detect protein S deficiency.
