M.D./M.P.H. Curriculum

Curricular overview

In the five-year M.D./M.P.H. dual degree program, you will take foundational M.P.H. coursework during the first two years of medical school. In the third year, you will focus full-time on the M.P.H., with most of the year devoted to coursework, research, and community engagement, with some variation by the focus of your M.P.H. There are two options for the combined degree - a focus in Epidemiology or a focus in Health Management and Policy. After completing the M.P.H. year, you will return to medical school with public health skills to complete the final two years of the M.D. program. You will also complete a practice experience during the last two years of medical school, applying the public health skills in a project.

By pairing the M.P.H. in either Epidemiology or Health Management and Policy with an M.D., you will be prepared to engage in population-based clinical practice, conduct research as a medical practitioner, and take leadership roles in public-health policy, research and advocacy.

Students need 15 credits of HSMP electives. We strongly recommend HSMP 581: Population Health; HSMP 579: Health IT; HSMP 578: Performance Improvement; HSMP 584: Social Policy and Public Health (each 3 credits); plus 3 credits from the M.D. program to count for final HMP electives.

NOTE: Some winter/spring courses may need to be swapped depending on scheduling, but several courses are offered both quarters which gives flexibility.
