Dr. El Youssef graduated from the University of the West Indies, having attended medical school in Trinidad and Tobago. He then received his medical residency training from the University of Nevada in Las Vegas, receiving an award for best third year resident and attending as chief resident from 2007-2008. After graduating from the endocrinology fellowship at OHSU, Dr. El Youssef obtained a career development (K23) grant from the NIH within his first year, and currently specializes in managing diabetes mellitus at the Harold Schnitzer Diabetes Health Center. He has a special interest in type 1 diabetes and has made it his life’s pursuit to develop the artificial pancreas, a smart insulin/glucagon pump that will automatically control glucose levels. He is currently involved in on-going trials of such a device at OHSU.
