In June, Dean Mark Richardson was offered – and accepted – membership in the Blue Ridge Academic Health Group. The mission of Blue Ridge is to take a societal view of health and health care needs to identify recommendations for academic health centers to help create greater value for society. The Group also recommends public policies to enable academic health centers to accomplish these ends.

The Blue Ridge Group has issued 14 reports, with a fifteenth due out soon. A book based upon the initial seven reports entitled, “The Academic Health Center: Leadership and Performance,” was published in 2005 by Cambridge University Press, and focused on developing a framework for meeting the challenges of improving health in the 21st century. The most recent report issued by the Group in February 2010 was “The Role of Academic Health Centers in Addressing the Social Determinants of Health.”

The Blue Ridge Academic Health Group was founded in 1993 by Don Detmer, then Vice President for Health Affairs at the University of Virginia. The Group is currently co-chaired by Claire Pomeroy, MD, MBA, Vice Chancellor for Human Health Sciences, Dean, School of Medicine, University of California—Davis, and Wright Caughman, MD, Executive Vice President for Health Affairs, Emory University. Darrell Kirch, MD, President of the Association for American Medical Colleges and Steve Wartman, MD, PhD, President of the Association for Academic Health Centers, are also members. Members of the Group join as individuals, and not as representatives of their institutions.

“Since 1993, the work emerging from the Blue Ridge Group has provided excellent, innovative and objective guidance for academic health centers as together we navigate the landscape of the 21st century. The group contributes an important society-wide lens to our national dialogue about the future of health and health care,” said OHSU President Joe Robertson, MD, MBA. “A hearty congratulations to Mark on his invitation to join this influential group. I know he will add significantly to their outcomes.”
