Oregon Health & Science University recognizes that students and their families may have difficulty financing post-secondary education. To ensure that all qualified students have an opportunity to attend OHSU, the university provides financial assistance through the Registrar and Financial Aid Office.
There are four general types of financial aid:
- scholarships- considered gift aid (they do not require employment or repayment)
- grants- considered gift aid (they do not require employment or repayment)
- loans - referred to as self-help
- employment - referred to as self-help
OHSU awards institutional scholarships primarily on the basis of financial need. In addition to OHSU scholarships, many of our students receive assistance from sources outside the university such as foundations, businesses, labor unions, professional organizations and the military.
Information regarding outside sources of funding can be obtained from the Registrar and Financial Aid Office, the OHSU SoN scholarship page or any public library.
Types of financial aid:
Federal Pell Grants- provided by the federal government on the basis of financial need.
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants- provided by the federal government and are available to undergraduates without baccalaureate or professional degrees.
SEOGs- are awarded only to the lowest income students, with first selection based on Federal Pell Grant recipients.
Educational loans- the largest type of financial assistance provided at OHSU. Most students who apply for financial aid are typically eligible for student loans. Nursing student loans are long-term educational loans for students in nursing. These loans are funded by the federal government.
Employment - Many students use this type of assistance to reduce or avoid the long-term obligations associated with loans. Please contact the Registrar and Financial Aid Office for more information on The Federal Work-Study Program and all other financial aid opportunities.Financial aid can be awarded only to students who have been accepted for admission, so it is important that new students carefully follow all instructions from the Registrar and Financial Aid Office. If you want financial aid, you should be applying for it while applying for admission. This way, the Registrar and Financial Aid Office will be able to notify you promptly after you are admitted. It also is very important that you observe the financial aid application deadlines and preferential filing dates. The Registrar and Financial Aid Office looks forward to hearing from you and welcoming you to campus.
