Our surgeons and scientists have worked together for decades to drive surgical innovation and shape the field. Surgical firsts include: 

  • The first mechanical heart valve
  • The first percutaneous angioplasty and coronary arteriography using specialized catheters
  • The first balloon embolectomy catheter
  • The first kidney transplant in an adolescent
  • Early clinical use of imatinib for select leukemias and gastrointestinal stromal tumors
  • The first totally endoscopic esophagogastric fundoplication

In Portland, the new state-of-the-art Vista Pavilion connects surgeons with specialists to integrate inpatient cancer care. Together, we are redefining cancer treatment for patients in Oregon and beyond.
