The Shins’ James Mercer hearts Doernbecher

Two of the many things that I fell in love with when I moved from Boston to Portland six years ago was the city’s sense of community pride and its spirit of generosity.

Acts of kindness and goodwill are seen every day in so many ways. It’s such a genuine and unique characteristic of our city that the TV show “Portlandia” pokes fun at it.

Another fixture of Portland, also featured on “Portlandia,” is the American indie rock band The Shins. The founder and front man, James Mercer, and his fellow band members have been working out of Portland since 2001. They’ve been on a world tour this summer promoting their newest album “Port of Morrow.”

Several weeks ago, we received a call from James’ wife, Marisa Mercer. She indicated that James wanted to donate the proceeds of the Shins’ Portland stop on the tour to the Division of Pediatric Cardiology at OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.

Tickets for the show, at the Keller Auditorium Sept. 26, are nearly sold out. The pediatric cardiology team at OHSU Doernbecher is profoundly touched and grateful for the generosity and compassion of the Mercer family and the entire creative and management team of The Shins.

Proceeds from the concert will support a program that works tirelessly to provide the very best possible care to children born with heart defects throughout the region.

Children born with these defects require highly specialized, comprehensive and coordinated care across their lifetime. The pediatric cardiology program at Doernbecher involves cardiologists, surgeons, anesthesiologists, intensivists, neurodevelopmental specialists, kidney and infectious disease specialists, nurses, technicians, administrators and many others.

We are a highly dedicated group of professionals who work very hard each day to support our patients and their families. The generosity of The Shins to support this work touches us deeply and words cannot really express our appreciation.
