Help paying your medical bills
We offer help paying for medical care at OHSU and at our OHSU Health partners, Hillsboro Medical Center and Adventist Health Portland. You may qualify for free or discounted care if you:
- Don’t have health insurance or don’t have enough health insurance.
- Qualify for state or federal medical assistance.

How we can help
We can:
- Connect you with resources.
- If you qualify, provide free or discounted care.
If you can, please ask for financial assistance before you get care. You can also ask during or after your care.
Who qualifies for financial assistance?
You may qualify if you:
- Receive medically necessary care or emergency care.
- Live in our service area, except for emergency care.
- Meet income limits.
- Have an insurance plan that lists your provider as in-network.
- Go through screening for any medical assistance resources you may qualify for.
If you qualify, we will give you free or discounted care for up to six months. You can apply again if you need more care.
If you apply and are turned down, you can appeal.
We don’t offer financial assistance if you:
- Have insurance and choose not to use it.
- Are not responsible for the bill.
- Live outside the U.S.
Medically necessary care
Medically necessary care is care that you need to keep your health from getting worse. It can include:
- Evaluation
- Diagnosis
- Treatment
Medically necessary care does not include:
- Elective cosmetic services
- Clinical trials
- Fertility services
- Routine vision exams
- Transplants and CAR T-cell therapy
- Take-home prescriptions or pharmacy supplies
- Medical equipment, including glasses and contact lenses
Financial assistance is available for care at all OHSU Health hospitals and clinic, except for some professional charges.

Income limits
You may qualify for financial assistance if your family:
- Has no insurance or has insurance through an employer or self-pay that doesn’t fully cover your needs.
- Has annual income that does not exceed four times the federal poverty level.
- If your household income is no more than three times the poverty level, you qualify for free care.
- If it’s between three and four times the poverty level, you qualify for a 65% discount.

Oregon
- Oregon Health Plan: Apply for Oregon’s Medicaid plan and Children’s Health Insurance Program. To learn more, call 800-699-9075.
- Senior Health Insurance Benefits Assistance: Get help with Medicare from trained counselors. To learn more, call 800-772-4134.
- Temporary Assistance for Needy Families: Get cash if your family meets income limits.
Washington
- Washington Health Plan Finder: Get information about health insurance.
- Temporary Assistance for Needy Families: Get cash help if your family meets income limits. Learn about the WorkFirst Program, which supports you as you look for a job.
- Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors: Get help with Medicare from trained counselors.
National
- Social Security: Learn about retirement, family, disability and survivor benefits and Supplemental Security Income.
How to apply for OHSU Health financial assistance
Before you apply, you’ll need to get registered and screened. Please call 503-494-8505 to do so.
You will need to verify your:
- Address
- Income, from:
- Pay stubs
- Income tax return
- Bank records
