Intradiscal Electrothermal Therapy

Intradiscal electrothermal therapy (IDET) treats pain caused by spinal disc degeneration or lower back (lumbar) disc problems. It can be an alternative to surgery.

The Procedure

Your doctor places a needle in the disc, using a special type of X-ray as a guide. Next, the doctor places a catheter (thin, hollow tube) in the disc and uses it to heat the inside of the disc. The heat shrinks tissues inside the disc, including the abnormal nerves that are causing pain.

This procedure is done on an outpatient basis, with no overnight hospital stay. Your doctor gives you sedation, medicine to make you relax and minimize discomfort. Your pain might get worse for a few days or a week after the procedure. Your doctor may give you pain medication to relieve this pain.

If you have IDET, you should not eat before the procedure. You need someone to take you home afterwards.
